Yesterday was one year since I (for the second time) asked out the first girl I was ever convinced I loved. I’m not sure if I did, in fact, love her. I feel like you only really know if you loved someone in hindsight, you know? When your head is clear, when you’re over the heartbreak, you look back and you think “I loved her” or “I didn’t love her”. I’m not sure, so maybe that means I didn’t. At any rate, she’s the current standard that the next girl will measure up to. If that girl is better, then the new girl becomes the standard. So it is.
Nick Hornby gets it. This movie gets it. This was the scene she made me turn it off after I showed it to her for the first time. I should’ve known then it wouldn’t work.
