In which we explore Twitter's staying power
- Aiden: Think identi.ca will work out?
- Jake: Probably not
- Jake: Dave winer will keep pushing it, but it'll never take off
- Jake: For the same reason all the other twitter clones haven't
- Aiden: And that is? Unoriginal?
- Jake: The community is ingrained in Twitter
- Aiden: I don't know. people may try it. Like you for instance and if they have enough internet cred. people may follow.
- Jake: Sure, people always try it
- Jake: Before identi.ca it was Plurk
- Jake: Before Plurk, it was Pownce
- Jake: Before Pownce, it was Jaiku
- Jake: But they always returned to Twitter
- Aiden: But if something just so happens to be better and someone with internet cred makes the switch. it could take off.
- Jake: Perhaps, but its unlikely
- Jake: Case in point: Leo Laporte has shitload of “cred”, and he was pimping Jaiku
- Jake: That was good for a few weeks, but now its dead
- Jake: Pownce was founded by Kevin Rose, a guy with even more cred than Leo in the 18-24 demo, and its still not even almost as big as Twitter
- Aiden: What if it wasn't a Tech/founder but a celeb (of any degree, e.g. julia allison) was to make a switch?
- Jake: Wouldn't be enough
- Aiden: What if two-three made the switch?
- Aiden: What if the founder of twitter made the switch?
- Jake: haha
- Aiden: well?
- Jake: He wouldn't
- Jake: Not that it would matter, he has less influence than the aforementioned celebrities
- Aiden: But if the creator of such site joins a competing site. surely that would create valleywag buzz and give the opposing site some cred.
- Jake: Not enough
- Jake: The founder of Twitter already has accounts on all the competitors
- Aiden: But is he active on the competing sites?
- Jake: Yeah
- Aiden: Fair enough then.
