You have a lot to answer for
I’m disappointed in you, world.
Julia Allison has fives pages on Wired. Do you want to know her secret? She pursues fame at the cost of likeability. What’s more, once she discovered this, she tried withdrawing slightly by taking a break from blogging (only to blog every day while she was on this break). Occasionally, she even laments about how she didn’t realise her newfound fame would make her so unhappy. However, she still pursues it.
What kind of monster is so addicted to fame, they chase after it even though it makes them depressed? She got to where she is by being in-your-face, not through any merit or achievement (although some, not me, may call that an achievement). She isn’t really famous, she’s infamous.
She is the anti-Gary Vaynerchuk, the effervescent host of Wine Library TV. Gary is a guy who just wants to be everybody’s friend. He’s constantly cheerful, he’s very self-critical and always striving to hone his craft. This is a guy who deserves even more recognition than he gets. His fame is based on his achievements with his family’s business and the accompanying video podcast, along with a sprinkling of charm. This is why Gary will be in the minds of others long after Julia Allison. Gary’s legacy is one of kindness and self-belief. Julia’s is one of spite.
